Reflexivity, positionality & CCO

For the spring edition of The CCO Data Collective (24th April), David Hollis (Lecturer in Organisation Studies, Sheffield University Management School) shared ethnographic fieldnotes and excerpts from his doctoral research within a cosmetics firm. While this fieldwork happened some time ago, David still has a methodological and/or theoretical “itch” that he can’t quite “scratch” insofar as whether his field materials could potentially say something interesting about themes of reflexivity, positionality and the wider communication as constitutive of organisation project.

True to The Collective’s spirit, from tiny acorns grow mighty oaks, with small snippets of data generating rich and lengthy discussions around such eclectic themes as fieldworkers’ roles as objects/tools, researcher complicity during fieldwork, and the role of stereotypes in othering researchers and participants. The session closed with a wider discussion about the role of field notes within CCO and their potential role as a central source of data (rather than an accompaniment) to a “main event” within journal articles.

Thank you to everyone for attending and we hope to see many of you in Milan for our PDW at EGOS 2024!
